EPS 24: Positive Affirmations for Kids Ages 3–5: Simple Ways Parents Can Start

Learn simple ways to introduce positive affirmations to preschoolers and kindergarteners, including children with developmental delays.

Positive affirmations can help young children begin practicing encouraging self-talk and recognizing positive qualities about themselves. For preschoolers and kindergarteners, the key is to keep affirmations simple, meaningful, and easy to repeat.

In this episode of Angel’s Awesome Minds, we explore how parents can introduce affirmation habits to children ages 3–5, including children with developmental delays, early learning differences, and special needs.

Start With Simple Affirmations

Young children do not need complicated statements. Begin with short phrases they can understand, such as:

  • “I am loved.”
  • “I am special.”
  • “I can try.”
  • “I can learn.”

Parents can say the affirmation with their child, talk briefly about what it means, and make it part of a familiar daily routine.

Make Affirmations a Parent-Child Activity

Affirmation time can also become an opportunity for guided reflection. Parents can help children connect positive words with everyday experiences, accomplishments, and simple goals.

For example, an affirmation such as “I can try” can be paired with an achievable goal like putting away a few toys or practicing a new skill.

Build Positive Habits Before School

Starting affirmation routines during the preschool and kindergarten years can help create a positive emotional foundation before early schooling begins. The goal is not to make the routine complicated—it is to give children simple opportunities to practice positive words about themselves with support from a parent or caregiver.

Keep It Simple and Consistent

For children with developmental delays or learning differences, simple language and repetition can make the routine easier to follow. Choose one affirmation, practice it together, and gradually introduce additional statements as your child becomes comfortable.
